Understanding Fiber in Food Labels
Food labels sometimes use terms that are confusing to non-nutritionists. One of the most confusing sections on the food label is the fiber section. You may be concerned about getting enough fiber, but when there are different types of fiber mentioned on the label, how can you know if you are getting enough of the right fiber?
In general, the fiber in your food will be divided into two categories, soluble and insoluble fiber. Both of these fibers are extremely important to your health and weight loss and they each do something different.
Insoluble fiber: Insoluble fiber can move easily through your intestines and helps to prevent constipation. It can also reduce your likelihood of getting colon cancer.
Soluble fiber: Soluble fiber binds with the fatty acids in your stomach, helping reduce your overall cholesterol level. It also stops your food from being released as energy too quickly which can help regulate your blood sugar and keep you feeling full longer.
As you can see, both types of fiber work in concert to make your body function more effectively and to keep your health in check.
