Turn Your Walk into a Workout

Walking is by far one of the most convenient ways of getting more physical activity into your life — and helps you with your weight loss goal. It’s free and can be done in practically any type of weather, barring extreme conditions of course.

That said, to get more out of your walk and to help you lose weight, turn your daily walk into a workout. It takes little more than a pair of sneakers and a warm-up suit to get more out of your walk in Maple Grove, St. Cloud, or Woodbury, Minnesota.

Follow these tips to get more mileage out of your walks.

  • Utilize the right accessories. An MP3 player is a great walking workout companion. Music takes your mind off of walking and helps you to pick up the pace as you walk to the beat. Add songs with a fast beat to your playlist so you have a fresh supply of songs with a snappy beat.
  • Choose a moderately difficult walking route. Include a walking route or path that has hills and possibly steps. The hills and steps will bring up your heart rate, help you burn more calories and assist with weight loss — more so than walking on a flat route.
  •  Add some strenuous variety to your walking routine. For example, walk to an outdoor park equipped with bleachers and an outdoor playground. Step up and down the bleachers a few times or climb the playground equipment. Adding strenuous activity to your walking will help you to lose weight.

Before stepping up your walk, make sure you warm up by stretching and walking at a gentle pace for about 5 minutes in order to get your muscles ready for more rigorous work. When finished with your walking workout, be sure to end with a cool down. End your walking workout by walking gently for at least 5 minutes. Then, stretch to end your routine.
