Traveling and Weight Loss
Overcoming obstacles when you are trying to lose weight is just part of everyday life. Our environment and the foods we have a choice of eating are not always completely under our control. Holidays, parties, weekend activities and vacations can often present us with temptations and risks that may jeopardize our weight loss efforts.
When presented with obstacles such as traveling for work or vacations, following several easy steps may help us along through the tough times when exercise or dieting are not as easy as it may be at home.
Fast food is one of the most damaging temptations to any weight loss plan. To help avoid the fast food joints, plan your snacks in advance. Pack healthy snacks in portions that fit well into your diet plan. If you are traveling by car, pack a cooler with vegetables, nuts and other healthy choices that can be easily accessible. Keep cool and refreshing diet friendly drinks like ice water and sugar free juices in the car with you to make the trip more comfortable.
Traveling by plane can be just as easy. Store dried fruit, nuts and low fat energy bars in your carry-on bag and avoid the fast food shops at the airport terminal. Because of travel restrictions, it is a good idea to carry an empty water bottle so that you can easily pass through airport security, and then refill it at a water found after you are in the terminal.
Although exercise while traveling can be hard to fit into your schedule, you may be presented with the opportunity to do plenty of walking. Instead of signing up for a bus tour of the city you are visiting, see the sights on foot and burn calories while you are distracted by the awe’s of a new location. Whether you are on a vacation or traveling for business, most hotels provide facilities for working out. Set time aside in the morning or evening and fit exercise into your schedule so that you stay on track with your weight loss goals!
When you are out for a meal while traveling, choose your foods carefully. While most restaurants have healthy choices on their menus, be aware of heavy dressings or foods cooked in saturated fats. Lean meats, fish and steamed vegetables will fit better into your diet plans and help you to lose weight. Traveling may not be all about your diet. You may want to treat yourself to a dessert of a special meal. Plan ahead and adjust your diet so that the meal or treat does not completely sabotage your efforts.
