With the popularity of low-carbohydrate diets, much attention has been given to the effects of protein on weight loss. Research indicates restricting your diet to only protein-rich foods forces the kidneys to go into a state known as “ketosis.” Ketosis occurs when the body does not have enough carbohydrates and has to release ketones in order to burn stored fat for energy. This is an example of medical weight loss but this is not the only way protein helps with weight management. Instead, you can benefit from the weight loss power of protein while still including some carbohydrates in your diet.
Protein, especially the low-fat variety, is generally low in calories. Additionally, protein helps you feel more full for longer because it takes longer for your body to turn it into energy-creating glucose. That means that you can eat less of it and still feel satisfied, which can help you reduce your overall calorie intake. So, go ahead and have some mashed potatoes or bread with your meal-just make sure that protein takes up more space on your plate.
Protein also reduces the amount of glucose in your body. Without all that extra glucose to be stored, you have fewer fat cells to contend with on your weight loss journey. When integrated into a diet that includes some carbohydrates and is high in fiber and vitamin-rich vegetables, protein can safely become the cornerstone of your diet.
