Self Monitoring Your Health Progress

As you attempt to lose weight and become more physically active you will have frequent meetings with your Dr. Richardson. She will track your health progress as your blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides improve. In order to motivate yourself in between meetings with Dr. Richardson, you can monitor some of these things yourself.

You can buy a blood pressure monitor from many retailers, both online and in store. A free option is to regularly check your blood pressure in the machine at your local pharmacy. Chart your progress in your food log or a diary. Blood pressure changes take time, but losing weight almost always improves high blood pressure.

Buy a blood glucose monitor for diabetics to monitor the progress in your blood sugar. These machines are not just for diabetics. If Dr. Richardson or your primary care physician has warned you that you are pre-diabetic or that you show elevated glucose levels, a blood glucose monitor can help you monitor your progress in reducing them. These monitors are also available both online and in store.

Before buying new equipment though, check with Dr. Richardson to see which would be the most useful for you, how often you should check, and what changes you can reasonably expect.
