Achieving Your Perfect Body

How do you respond when you see a person who appears to be healthy, fit, and at an ideal weight? Are you envious? Do you wish you looked more like they did? Are you curious about what they have to do to look that way?

It's natural to compare ourselves to other people. Unfortunately, we often tend to look at our differences in terms of "better" or "worse," instead of simply acknowledging that they're different. When you're trying to make changes in your life, like losing weight, these "better or worse" comparisons can be detrimental to your success.

In some cases, it can be positive to be motivated and inspired by someone who has already accomplished the goals you're working toward. However, if you tend to criticize yourself with thoughts like, "I'll never look like that," or "what's wrong with me that I'm not like that?" then you're less likely to achieve your goals by studying other people. A positive attitude and belief in your own ability to succeed is an important part of achieving any type of success, especially weight loss.

The other danger in comparing your body to others' is that you may be looking at someone with a completely different body type and therefore focusing on an unattainable ideal. For example, if you're short and pear-shaped, all the dieting and exercising in the world won't transform you into someone who is tall and lanky. Instead of focusing on the benefits of contrary body types, you should focus on becoming the best and healthiest version of you.
